Calculation of dosage and digestibility of mineral nutrition

For accurate planning of top dressing, it is important to distinguish between simple fertilizers containing one nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and complex ones, which consist of two or more elements. Active ingredient is expressed as a percentage of the fertilizer mass. An accurate calculation allows providing plants with the necessary application rate of nutrients without wasting the products.

To calculate the physical mass of fertilizer based on a dose of active ingredient, divide the target dose by the percentage of the element content and multiply by 100. For example, to apply 10 g of nitrogen per 1 m², you will need about 22 g of urea (10 × 100 / 46 = 21.7 g) or 29 g of ammonium nitrate (10 × 100 / 34 = 29.4 g).

For reverse calculation — determining the amount of the element applied based on a known physical mass — the mass of the fertilizer is multiplied by the percentage of the active ingredient and divided by 100. Thus, when applying 20 g of urea, the soil will receive approximately 9 g of nitrogen (20 × 46 / 100 = 9.2 g), and when applying 20 g of ammonium nitrate — about 7 g of nitrogen (20 × 34 / 100 = 6.8 g).

Nutrients from mineral fertilizers are in a water-soluble form and are assimilated by plants faster than those from organic matter. At the same time, the utilization rates of elements vary significantly depending on the form of the fertilizer.

Scientifically based application of fertilizers must compensate for the removal of nutrients with the harvest. Provided that nutrients are returned, effective soil fertility increases every year, while an imbalance of macro- and microelements can impair the chemical composition of plants.

Impact on soil and risks of using ballast substances

Mineral fertilizers do not impair the physical properties of the soil — its structure, density, or moisture capacity. Due to the improved development of the root system of plants, they can slightly increase the humus content, as well as activate soil microflora due to balanced nutrition. The chemical elements of fertilizers are natural to the environment and participate in all physiological processes of plants.

Mineral potassium and nitrogen fertilizers (with the exception of sodium and potassium nitrate) acidify the soil. With their systematic application, be sure to carry out liming.

A drawback of many fertilizers is the presence of accompanying (ballast) elements originating from natural raw materials: fluorine, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, strontium, cadmium, and others. With long-term application of high doses, they accumulate in the soil, reducing its soil fertility and product quality. Fertilizers without deep chemical processing contain the most ballast substances (phosphorite meal, potassium chloride), whereas in double superphosphate, ammophos, potassium sulfate, and potassium nitrate, their quantity is insignificant.

Microelements have an atomic mass greater than 40 and are classified as heavy metals. Their excess due to excessive application rates is toxic: copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc can accumulate in the soil and harvest, while an excess of boron leads to boron fatigue of the soil.

When choosing fertilizer forms, consider the sensitivity of crops to accompanying elements. Below are the characteristics of ammonium chloride, which requires caution during application.

Application of phosphorus, potassium, and complex fertilizers

For the proper selection of fertilizers for a specific crop, it is necessary to consider the solubility of the active ingredients and the soil reaction. Phosphorus and potassium forms differ in their behavior in the soil profile: some are easily leached, others are firmly bound by the soil. The application of potassium requires caution due to the sensitivity of several crops to accompanying chlorine ions.

Phosphorite meal must never be applied simultaneously with lime. Potassium chloride must be applied exclusively in the autumn for crops sensitive to chlorine (potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers).

Complex fertilizers allow for balancing plant nutrition at different stages of the growing season. It is important for an agronomist to select the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium depending on the development phase. Starter application requires a high concentration of phosphorus, whereas fully soluble balanced mixtures are more effective for current top dressing during the growing season.

Micronutrient fertilizers and chemical soil conditioners

Micronutrients activate enzymatic processes and increase the resistance of crops to stress factors. Their application is most effective in the form of foliar treatments or during preparation of seed material. The need for a specific micronutrient is often dictated by the soil type and its acidity level.

Chemical reclamation of acidic soils allows optimizing the environment for most crops. Various conditioners differ in the speed of neutralization and the content of associated elements like magnesium. The choice of a specific liming material depends on the particle size distribution of the soil and the urgency of the required effect.

The complex conditioner Izvest-Gumi not only deacidifies the soil faster than standard limestone but also acts as an anti-stress stimulant due to the content of humates, boron, and Fitosporin-M microorganisms.

How humic substances affect soil and plants

The use of peat and brown coal in their pure form is primarily a method of mechanical reclamation. In raw materials, nutrients are in a poorly accessible form, so in over-compacted soils, they work primarily as loosening agents. It is much more effective to apply organomineral fertilizers (OMF). In addition to basic nutrition, they contain physiologically active humic acids, which directly influence crop productivity.

The direct effect of humic substances consists in stimulating metabolism and improving the respiration of plant cells. Under the influence of humates, the enzymatic apparatus of plants is activated, which allows them to more fully absorb nutrients even under unfavorable environmental conditions or nutrient imbalances. As a result, the plant's resistance to drought and high temperatures increases, and the concentration of sugars and vitamin C in fruits and vegetables rises.

The indirect action of humic compounds is aimed at improving the root habitat. They optimize soil density and water-physical properties, help retain soil moisture, and activate beneficial microflora. In addition, humic acids bind toxic agents — pesticide residues and heavy metals — and also increase the utilization rate of nutrients from mineral fertilizers.

The effectiveness of humic preparations is closely related to the mineral nutrition background. The greatest increase in efficiency is observed in fields with low or, conversely, very high NPK levels.

Strictly follow the dosage: soluble humates work as growth stimulants only in micro-concentrations — thousandths and ten-thousandths of a percent. Exceeding these application rates inhibits crop development.

Application regulations and dosages of humic fertilizers

The domestic industry produces a wide range of OMFs from local raw materials, including brands such as Agricola, Ispolin, Ogorodnik, Zeleny Kover, and Pole Chudes. Brown coals from the Kumertau deposit are also used for humate production. Based on them, a series of GUMI preparations (brands Gumi-20, Gumi-20M, Gumi-30, Gumi-30M, Gumi-90, Gumi-90M), Borogum-M, and the "Bogatyy" line (specialized compositions "Vegetables, Berries, Lawn, Flowers" and "House") have been created.

A separate class consists of OMFs based on composted poultry manure, additionally enriched with macro-elements, micro-elements, and humates. A prominent representative of this group is the "Gumi-Omi" line. Preparations of this series are available in specialized modifications for specific crop types.

For the liquid preparation "Gumi-20", solutions are prepared immediately before use. When using "Gumi-30 Universal" paste, it is necessary to first prepare a concentrated stock solution. This allows for accurate dosing of the active ingredient during subsequent dilution.

  1. Dissolve 300 g of "Gumi-30 Universal" paste in 600 ml of water to obtain a stock solution.
  2. Measure out the required volume of stock solution in accordance with the application rate for the specific operation.
  3. Dilute the measured volume in water and proceed with treating the plants or planting material.

The application of organo-mineral and bio-activated fertilizers allows not only to provide plants with necessary nutrition but also to protect them from unfavorable environmental conditions. In field and greenhouse practice, the efficiency of such preparations directly depends on following application regulations and the correct preparation of working solutions. Proven application rates of various humic and complex formulations for major crop types are provided below.

Practice of Using Humic and Organo-Mineral Fertilizers

Gumi-90 preparations in dry powder form and Gumi-K-OLYMPIC in gel form require the preliminary preparation of a concentrated stock solution. In addition to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in an NPK ratio of (1:1.5:1), Gumi-K-OLYMPIC contains boron (0.17%), molybdenum (0.007%), sulfur (0.015%), selenium (0.0002%), lithium (0.0005%), as well as a complex of chelated microelements (Cu — 0.01%, Co — 0.002%, Mn — 0.05%, Ni — 0.002%, Zn — 0.01%, Cr — 0.0007%) and over 80 natural trace elements and minerals. Dilution of stock solutions and their further dosages for specific technological operations differ significantly.

  1. For Gumi-90 (powder): dissolve 6 g of the preparation in 100 ml of water to obtain a stock solution.
  2. For Gumi-K-OLYMPIC (gel): dissolve 300 g of the preparation in 600 ml of water to obtain a stock solution.

The liquid complex fertilizer Bogatyi (OGOROD line) is supplied in a bio-activated form and contains basic nutrients in an N-2%, P-2%, K-3% ratio. The microelement composition includes copper (0.003%), cobalt (0.0008%), manganese (0.03%), nickel (0.0008%), zinc (0.003%), molybdenum (0.001% and 0.00025%), sulfur (0.015% and 0.003%), selenium (0.00003%), lithium (0.0001%), chromium (0.0003%), and boron (0.2%). The presence of Fitosporin-M and the humic preparation Gumi-20 in the composition ensures plant protection against pathogens and stress factors, and also improves fruit sugar content and shelf life.

The liquid fertilizer Bogatyi combines the functions of nutrition and protection thanks to the content of 1% Fitosporin-M and 5% Gumi-20. This allows not only for fertilizing plants but also for protecting them from diseases and stress during the growing season.

  • Soaking seeds, bulbs, and corms: 5 drops per 100 ml of water immediately before sowing for 1–2 hours.
  • Irrigation of seedlings (every 7–10 days from full emergence to planting): 5 ml per 2 l of water (rate calculated for 50 plants).
  • Spraying during the growing season (3–5 treatments per season): 20–30 ml per 10 l of water per an area of 100–200 m².
  • Irrigation of vegetables and strawberries (every 2 weeks): 20–30 ml per 10 l of water (working solution consumption — 5–10 l per 1 m²).
  • Irrigation of fruit trees, shrubs, and grapevines (every 2 weeks): 20–30 ml per 10 l of water (working solution consumption — 5–10 l per one plant).

The Borogum-M preparation is specifically designed to improve fruit set, stimulate flowering, and prevent the formation of barren flowers. It contains 1.4% boron, 3% Gumi-20 preparation, macronutrients (nitrogen — 1.4%, phosphorus — 0.8–1.0%, potassium — 1.0%), and a wide spectrum of microelements, including molybdenum (0.007% and 0.00025%), sulfur (0.015% and 0.002%), and chelated forms of copper (0.002%), cobalt (0.00025%), manganese (0.01%), nickel (0.00025%), zinc (0.01%), selenium (0.00002%), lithium (0.0001%), and chromium (0.0002%). The main purpose of this formulation is to stimulate fruit and root formation, as well as to protect crops from fruit set shedding.

  • Spraying vegetating plants: 50 ml of preparation per 3 l of working solution for treating 100 m² of plantings.
  • Pre-planting tuber treatment: 30 ml of preparation per 1 l of water for treating 30 kg of potatoes.
  • Soaking seeds before sowing: 1 drop of preparation per 2 teaspoons of water for treating 10 g of seeds for 12–24 hours.

The dry organo-mineral fertilizer Gumi-Omi UNIVERSAL is used to improve soil structure, increase soil fertility, and protect crops from frosts, drought, and heavy metal salts. The preparation contains boron (100–150 mg/kg) and copper (50–60 mg/kg), as well as an organic base and a complex of macronutrients. Its balanced formula is suitable for the majority of vegetable, berry, and floral crops.

When applying dry Gumi-Omi UNIVERSAL fertilizer locally into holes or furrows, be sure to mix it thoroughly with the soil to prevent direct contact with the root system and avoid chemical burns to the plants.

Practical application of bio-activated organomineral fertilizers of the "Gumi-Omi" series

To optimize the nutrition of vegetable, field, and berry crops, complex powdered fertilizers of the "Gumi-Omi" series are used in modern technologies. These products combine the functions of mild organic nutrition, mineral top dressing, and a physiological growth stimulant. The presence of the humic component allows plants to more effectively cope with abiotic stresses — drought, frost, and also reduces the toxic effect of heavy metals in the soil. Systematic use of these fertilizers contributes to restoring the soil structure and increasing its natural soil fertility.

The basic composition of most specialized brands in the series is standardized regarding the content of organic matter, microelements, and growth regulators. This allows an agronomist to accurately calculate the total load on the soil when planning a nutrition system.

Application rates of the product depend on the method of its incorporation into the soil and the plant's growing season phase. The most effective methods are broadcast application before autumn or spring ploughing, local distribution in the root zone during planting, and top dressing in the form of irrigation with a working solution.

When applying fertilizers locally in holes or furrows, be sure to mix the powder thoroughly with the soil. For strawberries, the depth of the protective soil layer over the fertilizer should be at least 2–3 cm to prevent direct contact of the root system with the product.

Seasonal and specialized organomineral mixtures

For the stable development of berry plantations and ornamental plantings, a balance of elements during specific growth phases is important. Specialized and seasonal brands of "Gumi-Omi" organomineral fertilizers are designed precisely to solve this task. Humic acids in their composition reduce plant stress from weather fluctuations and the effect of heavy metals, while composted organic matter restores the soil structure. Regular use of these mixtures activates soil microflora and increases overall yield. The exact application rates and methods for the products are provided below.

"Gumi-Omi" organomineral fertilizers combine the rapid action of mineral fertilizers and the prolonged effect of organics. Humates in their composition convert hard-to-reach soil phosphates into a form absorbable by roots.
