Technologies and principles of effective pre-sowing tillage for winter crops
In steppe regions, pre-sowing tillage serves one primary goal: to conserve soil moisture for seed germination and the autumn development of winter crops. Proper preparation creates a leveled field, a loose fine-cloddy layer, and a compacted seedbed at the sowing depth. This not only conserves water but also facilitates the passage of seeders and combine harvesters. All operations must be carried out immediately before sowing.

Technology and implements are selected based on the specific condition of the field:

  • The field is infested with weeds, and the seedbed is compacted. Carry out cultivation to the sowing depth. Use harrows and drags for leveling. To avoid soil drying, work with flat-cutting cultivator sweeps — they minimize soil inversion.
  • The field contains only annual weeds (no perennials). It is most effective to use harrow-cultivators with drags. Instead of factory-made implements, farmers often use homemade ones: segments from decommissioned headers are welded to the teeth of heavy spike-tooth harrows. They loosen the soil finely, without inverting the layer, conserving moisture at the sowing depth, and due to their wide working width, they operate faster than conventional cultivators. This method is suitable only for well-tilled, non-cloddy areas.
  • The field is free of weeds, and the top layer is fine-cloddy and loose. During a dry autumn, cultivation can be replaced by conventional harrowing or omitted entirely.

Excessive loosening in a dry autumn sharply increases porosity and dries out the soil. If you perform pre-sowing tillage deeper than the standard, seeds will "hang" in the dry loose layer without contact with capillary moisture. Adjust the depth strictly to the level of seed placement so that the seeder can "cut" the seed row into the compacted bed.

When and where pre-sowing rolling is necessary

If, by the time of sowing, the field remains cloddy and uneven, and its moisture content has dropped below the level of capillary rupture, the field must be rolled. This practice is also mandatory in cases of late primary tillagetillage and delays in sowing. The roller eliminates excessive looseness, which could otherwise cause the settling soil to tear plant roots or push the tillering node to the surface during winter, leading to the death of winter crops.

Rolling should be avoided on heavy clay soils in the foothills (compacted chernozems, gray forest soils) and on heavy soils in the western zone. In conditions of excessive winter-spring humidity, autumn rolling will cause severe self-compaction of these soils, which will impair the development of winter crops.
