European columbine is cultivated as an ornamental plant throughout the Russian Federation. However, when assessing the purity of seed material and analyzing crop weediness, it is important to consider its danger. The entire plant is poisonous; therefore, its parts must not be present in forage grass mixtures. Controlling weediness with seeds of this species requires increased attention from the agronomist.
The entire plant possesses poisonous properties. The toxic effect of poisoning by European columbine seeds is similar to that of aconites.
How to identify fruits and seeds of columbine
The fruit of the plant is a follicle, consisting of straight fruitlets. They can be either completely glabrous or covered with pubescence. The seeds themselves have an oval-triangular shape that narrows toward the base and the apex. A small flat wing is visible on the ventral side of the seed, and a light, slightly depressed hilum is located at its base.
