Training farmers in Jaintia Hills on post-harvest processing technologies for buckwheat

On September 1, a one-day workshop focused on the post-harvest management of buckwheat crops was held at the KVK Jaintia Hills training center in Moopun (Wahiajer). The event brought together 116 farmers and industry experts to share experience in the fields of agricultural technologies and entrepreneurship.

KVK Jaintia Hills specialist Dr. A. Dimpep emphasized the importance of competent post-harvest management, which allows for minimizing harvest losses and increasing the market value of the produce. Expert from the Directorate of Food Processing, Eleonora Shilla, detailed the rules for storage and primary processing of raw materials as a way to ensure high product quality before sale.

Business development issues were covered by a representative of PRIME Meghalaya, Lakynti Marbaniang. She informed the farmers about available government initiatives, such as the CM-Elevate project, and opportunities for submitting applications through the Meghalaya One portal. Continuing this topic, Vicky Lanong from PRIME Meghalaya clarified the requirements for branding, packaging, labeling, and mandatory FSSAI product registration to the participants.

Farmer and president of the Shalyntem ki Nongrep Society, Paiya Miliempdah, shared his practical experience with his colleagues. He noted the prospects of using specialized equipment, as well as integrating beekeeping into buckwheat farming to generate additional income. Furthermore, the farmer emphasized the importance of maintaining soil fertility through the application of organic fertilizer and the implementation of crop rotation.

The seminar proceedings, which included discussions on food safety and market promotion, were moderated by horticulture specialist B. Kharbamon. At the conclusion of the meeting, KVK Jaintia Hills farm manager M. Kharbuli thanked the participants and organizers for a productive discussion.
