Record grain harvest in China against the background of increasing production volumes
This autumn, the country hosted the ninth Farmers' Harvest Festival. According to Minister of Agriculture Zhang Zhu, with more than a fifth of the autumn area already harvested, the country is on track for another high full-year figure. In 2025, grain production exceeded 700 million tonnes for the second consecutive year, providing each resident of China with more than 500 kilograms of grain.
The increase in production volumes is attributed to favorable farming conditions, including an extension of frost-free seasons in the northeast, which has made it possible to grow rice and corn in Heilongjiang Province. The scientific basis for crop productivity is also carbon dioxide (CO2), which participates in photosynthesis. NASA reports show large-scale global greening, with China and India playing a leading role, and China accounting for a quarter of the global increase in leaf area.
The development of the agricultural sector has been accompanied by an increase in per capita food and meat consumption since the 1980s. Accessible energy helps achieve such figures: about 70% of ammonia produced from natural gas and coal goes into creating fertilizer, while tractors and combine harvesters run on diesel fuel.
