Microgreen producer Everything Sprouts has expanded its list of recalled products.
The Robust Radish Sprout Mix line has been added to the recall list. This measure applies to 5-ounce packages (barcode 087906000075) with lot numbers 223, 226, 230, and 233. The products were distributed between August 13 and August 26 through retail chains and wholesalers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. There have been no reports of illnesses linked specifically to the radish sprouts at this time.
Previously, the company initiated a recall for alfalfa sprouts under the Everything Sprouts and Calco brands, as well as Crunchy Protein Sprout Mix and Zesty Garlic Mix. The main reason for expanding the list is not the use of shared raw materials, but potential cross-contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli or Salmonella. The risk is attributed to the use of shared equipment, surfaces, or the environment within the production facility.
In total, 55 cases of illness have been recorded during the current outbreak, which began between May 31 and August 8. Infections have been identified in 15 states, with 46 people infected with E. coli, seven with Salmonella, and two with both pathogens simultaneously. Hospitalization was required for four patients, and there have been no fatalities.
Experts note that the growth of seeds in warm and humid conditions creates a favorable environment for bacterial multiplication. Federal food safety authorities recommend that children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems avoid consuming raw sprouts. Heat treatment helps reduce health risks.
The investigation into the causes of contamination is ongoing. The FDA points out that the recall of alfalfa sprouts does not explain all cases of infection and is examining the role of a common seed supplier, which has not yet responded to the regulator's recommendations to recall a batch of raw materials. Consumers in possession of products from the recalled batches are advised to discard the items and sanitize storage areas, including refrigerators and kitchen utensils.
