Choosing a reliable metal frame and hoops for a greenhouse

Greenhouse frame is its long-lasting foundation. Unlike light-transmitting covering, which requires periodic replacement, a high-quality metal frame is installed for many years. The main requirement for it is corrosion resistance, especially at joints and connections.

A 2 cm square steel profile has become the standard for small-scale farm and home greenhouses. Despite its apparent lightness, it ensures the reliability of the entire structure. However, durability depends not only on the thickness of the metal but also on the color of its coating: light-colored paint protects the frame from excessive heating.

Galvanized and dark-colored frames become very hot under direct sunlight. This leads to thermal burns on plant leaves upon contact with the metal and accelerates the degradation of the polycarbonate where it touches the arches.

Double arches: structural strength and trellis convenience

When choosing between single arches and high-strength double arches, it is worth opting for the second option. Double arches not only better withstand snow loads and are less susceptible to deformation due to internal corrosion, but also significantly facilitate daily care of the plantings. They are convenient for attaching twine for trellising, additional crossbars, lighting systems, and shelves.

In greenhouses with single arches, trellising tall crops becomes a labor-intensive process. The agronomist has to stretch wire along the entire greenhouse to fix the twine. A double arch allows you to attach ropes directly to the frame elements at any point, which saves time when caring for plants.

  • Frame profile — 2 cm
  • Tomato trellising — at least 2 twines per plant
  • Polycarbonate warranty — 10 years
  • Removal of over-fertilized soil — 5 cm

To ensure the welded steel frame lasts longer than the warranty period of the polycarbonate, follow the operating rules:

  • Do not scratch the protective paint coating.
  • Do not subject structural elements to impacts during tillage.
  • Do not force the profile to bend.

A sturdy frame turns a greenhouse into a multifunctional space. In autumn, it can be used as a temporary storage or a space for processing the harvest. During the winter period, the structure can be adapted as a run for poultry: an insulated chicken coop with electric heating is assembled inside, and the transparent dome accumulates heat during the winter poultry feeding.

If the greenhouse was used as a poultry house in winter, the excess nitrogen from manure in the soil is eliminated using the following scheme:

  1. Remove the top 5 cm layer of soil and use it as fertilizer in other areas.
  2. Carry out deep digging of the soil.
  3. Plant only leafy greens in this area during the current growing season.
