Methodology for evaluating the economic efficiency of agricultural activities and tillage practices

Any farm decisions — from changing a plant protection scheme to purchasing machinery — require a clear economic justification. The introduction of new fertilizers, feed additives, or resource-saving technologies is justified only when the resulting effect covers the expenses. To verify the feasibility of a planned agricultural practice, all costs of its implementation are compared with the final result.

In the practice of crop and livestock production, the economic effect of the measures taken is expressed in several key areas:

  • increase in crop yield and livestock productivity;
  • preservation of grown produce and reduction of losses during harvesting or storage;
  • improvement in the quality of the harvested crop;
  • direct cost savings through replacing manual labor with mechanized labor and introducing resource-saving technologies.

When evaluating efficiency, it is important to consider the entire complex of associated costs. If the applied technology provides an increase in yield, the total cost must necessarily include expenses for harvesting, processing, and transporting this additional produce.

Calculation of payback and cost-effectiveness

The main criterion for the efficiency of any agricultural practice is the increase in production output or net profit for every invested ruble. For this, the ratio of the obtained effect to the incurred costs is used. For example, when conducting measures to improve crop quality, the amount of additional profit obtained is divided by the sum of expenses required for quality improvement.

The ratio expressed as a percentage shows the level of cost-effectiveness. High product quality ensures increased market demand and a higher purchase price, which offsets additional investments and provides profit growth.
