Women in Shivasatakshi grow marigolds
In the Takaram area (Ward No. 10 of Shivasatakshi Municipality in Jhapa District), a local mother flower-grower group has started collective cultivation of marigolds. On six kattha of land, the participants planted 10,000 plants. The investment in the project amounted to about 25,000 rupees, and the expected income from flower sales during the upcoming Tihar festival may reach 300,000 rupees.
The women distribute duties among themselves: they tend to the plantings, harvest the crop, weave garlands, and prepare them for sale. The price of one garland is planned to be at the level of 100 to 150 rupees. To protect the harvest from rain and adverse conditions, the flowers and garlands are planned to be placed in a cold chain storage facility.
Mayor of the municipality Meghahang Thopra noted that the expansion of local flower production will reduce the need for supplies from other places and help women increase their incomes. The municipal administration has already helped farmers with the acquisition of transplants, and Deputy Mayor Narmaya Karki emphasized that local residents were assisted in forming groups for systematic management.
