Waste processing into biogas: the experience of the Vegpro enterprise in Naivasha

Kenya has set an example of transforming agricultural waste into an energy resource. At the Vegpro facility in Naivasha, 45,000 tonnes of plant-based waste were processed to produce biogas.

This process generates methane, which is used to produce electricity that powers the daily operations of the farm. This example is considered in the context of broader applications of waste-to-energy technologies.

Such technologies include incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis. Incineration makes it possible to drive a turbine to generate electricity, reducing the volume of waste by 95–96%. Gasification and pyrolysis provide the opportunity to process materials such as wood, biomass, and plastic waste into a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
