The software was developed by veterinarian and dairy livestock specialist Pádraig Lucey, MVB, MPVM, Ph.D. (Dairy Data Science). The tool is designed for veterinarians, consultants, and dairy cattle feeding specialists. The program allows users to attach farm export files from DairyComp and EZfeed systems, and then obtain necessary calculations and metrics for each pen based on tested scripts rather than rough estimates.
If the user does not yet have a DairyComp export, the tool suggests the necessary SHOW commands based on its own list of farm items. For stages with testing, energy-corrected milk (ECM) is calculated, and for farms where milk is only weighed, the daily weight of each cow is recorded. When exports are saved multiple times, the data is merged: milk metrics are tracked by day for pens, and cow test results by month.
The package is written in pure Python, and its metrics have been verified against the author's earlier R version. In the calculations, the farm is compared against itself rather than published targets. The package includes a herd example (a fictional calibration dairy farm) allowing users to test features before working with real data. In addition, related tools by the same author are mentioned: BESTPRED (USDA predictive system for estimating 305-day and mature-equivalent milk) and Dairy Ration Lab (a free tool for ration balancing).
