The impact of water quality on livestock health and productivity

Water containing an excessive amount of minerals, bacteria, algae, or other contaminants is considered poor for livestock animals. Consumption of such liquid leads to a decrease in appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and a drop in milk volume. In severe cases, neurological symptoms develop, including seizures and muscle tremors, which can end in the death of the animals. Furthermore, certain impurities, such as blue-green algae and sulfates, can alter the taste qualities of milk and meat.

To prevent risks, regular laboratory analysis of water is necessary. Experts recommend testing surface sources twice a year—in spring and autumn—and underground sources annually. If signs of contamination appear, such as an unusual odor, color change, or visible algae blooms, samples should be submitted immediately.

There are established standards for the content of substances in water. For instance, the sulfate level should be below 500 ppm, as their excess interferes with the absorption of copper and other minerals. The safe concentration of nitrates depends on the age of the animals: up to 100 ppm for adults and up to 50 ppm for calves and pregnant cows. In case blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are detected, livestock animals must be immediately isolated from the source and a veterinarian should be consulted.

Water purification methods depend on the type of contamination. Bacteria are eliminated through chlorination, ultraviolet radiation, or filtration. To prevent the appearance of blue-green algae, aeration of the water, control of fertilizer runoff and erosion, and proper handling of manure are recommended.

Improving water quality contributes to increased productivity and a reduction in veterinary expenses. The condition of sources can be optimized through regular cleaning of watering troughs, protection of water bodies from contamination, and the organization of alternative watering points.
