The development of vertical farming in Canada: technologies and food security
Traditional Canadian agriculture, focused on field production, is being supplemented by closed agricultural systems. Vertical farms are located in warehouses, offices, and specialized buildings, ensuring a stable harvest year-round regardless of weather conditions. The method involves the use of multi-tier structures, hydroponic and aeroponic installations, as well as artificial LED lighting with computer-controlled microclimate systems.
The transition to controlled environments allows for a reduction in water consumption, the elimination of pesticides, and an increase in output per unit of area. Canadian authorities support this sector through federal funding and programs such as the "Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership," aimed at the implementation of robotics and digital management systems.
An important trend has been the use of artificial intelligence and "digital twins." Sensors collect large datasets on nutrient media, plant condition, and air parameters, which machine learning algorithms transform into management decisions. "Digital twins" allow for the modeling of the results of condition changes before their implementation in practice, which contributes to yield forecasting and the optimization of work schedules.
To address the labor shortage, farms are being equipped with automated systems: from harvesting robots to autonomous monitoring platforms. The application of modern LED technologies helps regulate crop development by selecting the radiation spectrum for different growth phases, which is important for production energy efficiency.
Despite technological progress, the industry faces challenges. High electricity costs, significant capital investments, and the need for economic sustainability limit the range of cultivated crops mainly to fast-growing greens and herbs. Nevertheless, vertical farming is recognized as an important addition to traditional agriculture, increasing the resilience of the supply system in the face of climate risks and the growth of the urban population.
