The development of solar energy on agricultural land in Ireland

The geography of renewable energy facilities in Ireland covers regions with favorable conditions for the installation of solar panels. The largest number of major solar farms is concentrated in the counties of Meath and Kildare, as well as in the southeast of the country. Specifically, County Meath hosts facilities that rank among the top ten largest in the country, including sites in "Gallanstown" and "Gillinstown".

Creating solar farms requires meeting a number of criteria, including a flat or gently sloping terrain, access to electrical grids, developed road infrastructure, and proximity to large settlements. At the same time, in a number of regions such as Donegal, Sligo, western Mayo, Connemara, Kerry, and western Cork, such facilities are currently virtually non-existent.

There are plans for the development of solar energy near Inniskeen in County Louth. The possibility of repurposing depleted peatlands for solar panel placement is also being considered. At present, work is being finalized on regulations for the installation of grid-connected solar panels, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer.
