Risks of deer feeding with corn: recommendations for population management
Although supplemental feeding of deer with corn is often perceived as a humane measure, especially in harsh weather conditions, experts warn about its potential harm. Corn is not a balanced diet for these animals: it is high in carbohydrates but poor in proteins, fiber, and essential minerals. Prolonged consumption of such feed leads to nutrient deficiencies and serious health problems.
A sudden shift to a high-corn diet during the winter period poses a particular danger. This can trigger acidosis, a life-threatening condition. Instead of using supplemental feeding, it is recommended to focus on habitat improvement by planting native tree, shrub, and grass species. This will provide deer with a diverse diet throughout the entire year.
