Results of the NASA experiment on growing maize in microgravity conditions

NASA specialists conducted a study to examine the development of maize seed in spaceflight conditions. In the absence of gravity, the plants demonstrated atypical growth patterns. Observations showed that the roots of the maize began to develop laterally, and the shoots acquired a twisted shape. According to the researchers, the cause of such deviations was the lack of gravitational orientation, as well as a possible deficiency of light signals necessary for the proper development of seedlings.

This experiment clearly demonstrates the difficulties that agricultural production may face when attempting to colonize Mars. The obtained data highlight the importance of solving a fundamental task: ensuring the ability of plants to clearly determine their position in space. These results serve as confirmation of what a complex technical and biological challenge the development of agronomy is within the framework of long-term space colonization plans.
