Recommendations on choosing the timing and conditions for garlic planting

The main goal of autumn planting is to allow the cloves to root before the soil freezes. Improper timing can lead to delayed root system development or excessive growth of the aerial part, which ultimately negatively affects the harvest quality. Garlic requires a period of exposure to low temperatures, which stimulates clove division and bulb formation. In warm climatic zones, spring planting is possible, however, such bulbs often grow smaller in size, as the roots have less time to develop before the summer heat arrives.

For planting, one should choose well-lit areas with well-drained soil. Excessive humidity and heavy soil promote rot, so it is recommended to avoid lowlands. Enriching the soil with compost and its loosening ensure the necessary nutrients and improve drainage. Cloves are planted at a depth of 2 to 3 inches with the pointed end facing up. Recommended spacing: distance between plants from 4 to 6 inches, between rows — from 6 to 12 inches. After planting, it is advisable to cover the soil with mulch to stabilize temperature and soil moisture during the winter period.

It is important to maintain the integrity of the protective scales on the cloves during the preparation of planting material. To obtain a stable result, it is preferable to use seed material from specialized nurseries or garden centers, as store-bought garlic from grocery chains may be prone to diseases. It is not recommended to place the crop next to legumes, asparagus, or peas due to the risk of reduced yield for these species.

The ripening period for autumn planting is about 8–9 months. Readiness for harvesting is indicated by the yellowing and drying of the lower leaves, while the upper ones remain green. In ripe bulbs, the outer skin becomes dry and papery. For hardneck cultivars, scapes appear in the spring; removing them allows the plant's resources to be redirected towards bulb development.
