Rains in Victoria: joy for grain growers and flooding on farms
Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Victoria, leading to six water rescues. Due to the bad weather in the Heathcote area, 3,000 Powercor customers were left without electricity. Meteorologists warn that precipitation, thunderstorms, and potential strong winds will persist in the central and eastern regions, creating a risk of flash and river floods.
At the same time, grain farmers in the western part of the state view the spring precipitation positively. According to Murtoa farmer John Delahunty, the growing season is shaping up well, rains are coming at the right time, and soil moisture is helping grain filling. Agricultural consultant Martin Colbert noted that the recent precipitation was the second most significant of the current growing season after the autumn rains. They have allowed crops to build record yield potential, ensuring the completion of grain filling, cereal flowering, as well as pod formation in oilseeds and grain legumes.
