Questions to the Government of India regarding sugar industry policy

Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the government regarding its current strategy in the sugar sector. The primary catalyst for the discussion was a critical decline in sugar stocks, which have reached a nine-year low. According to the politician, this is negatively impacting consumers, who are forced to face rising product prices on the eve of the festive season.

Among the key complaints is the inconsistency of the measures taken by the authorities. Despite the country's status as one of the world's largest sugar producers and exporters, the government has had to impose export restrictions and import 10 lakh tonnes of sugar duty-free.

The statement pays special attention to the issue of raw material distribution. Kharge questioned the feasibility of the existing policy on ethanol production in light of the sugar shortage. He demanded clarification as to how diverting crops to biofuel production aligns with the current scarcity of sugar in the domestic market.
