Prospects and barriers to energy autonomy of farms
The question of transitioning agricultural machinery to electric propulsion remains a subject of debate. Modern batteries are significantly inferior to diesel fuel in terms of energy density, which complicates the operation of heavy tractors and combine harvesters. Furthermore, the need for long recharging times during the height of field work can critically slow down harvesting. According to AgriFutures forecasts, electrification will primarily affect stationary equipment, such as pumps, in the near future, while liquid fuel will remain the main energy source for heavy machinery in the long term.
Solar panels, combined with battery systems, allow farms to be powered by energy, but during prolonged cloudy weather, farmers still have to resort to using generators. There are also regulatory obstacles: for instance, cotton farmer Ian Brimblecombe in Queensland has faced energy grid rules that limit the ability to export surplus electricity and redistribute it between pumping stations, despite significant cost savings after implementing solar systems.
For the effective implementation of clean energy, farmers need access to reliable equipment, specialized financing, advice from trusted experts, and the presence of local technical specialists. At the same time, experts note an ambiguous attitude toward large-scale renewable energy projects in rural areas. The spread of misinformation and concerns regarding landscape changes or interference from distant authorities are slowing down the transition process. Nevertheless, some farmers are inclined to combine protests against large infrastructure projects with the installation of their own local energy systems.
In the future, a gradual development of farm energy independence is expected. An alternative could be the production of biodiesel from oils and fat waste to power the current fleet of machinery. It is likely that the number of solar panels on the roofs of farm buildings will increase, but the complete disappearance of diesel fuel tanks is not forecast for the foreseeable future.
