Nigeria has approved a new policy on biotechnology

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Kingsley Uche announced that the policy adopted back in 2001 has run its course, despite the successes achieved in gene editing and biomanufacturing. The updated document, titled "National Biotechnology Policy 2026," is intended to create a strategic framework for scientific research, implementation, and commercialization of technologies. Particular attention is paid to the development of climate-optimized technologies and precision agriculture methods.

In parallel with the policy update, the country's authorities have officially formalized Nigeria's participation in the Global Biotechnology Partnership. This decision is aimed at expanding access to international investment and scientific cooperation. The National Strategic Plan for Bioenergy was also approved. Within the framework of this direction, it is planned to use the country's rich reserves of biomass and bioresources for energy production. The Energy Commission of Nigeria, operating under the relevant ministry in conjunction with other agencies, will coordinate the work on the implementation of this plan.
