Nepal has adopted a new National Agricultural Policy 2083

The main goal of the adopted National Agricultural Policy 2083 is to create a modern, commercially successful, and competitive industry. The strategy was developed taking into account the federal structure of the state and is focused on increasing farm incomes, boosting production volumes, and developing export potential while simultaneously reducing dependence on imported products.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment Geeta Chaudhary noted that the document is intended to form a sustainable farming system and solve current industry problems. Among the key challenges addressed by the policy are the fragmentation of land plots, an increase in the area of idle land, and a shortage of storage capacities and irrigation systems. Factors such as youth migration, climate change, and insufficient productivity of agricultural production are also taken into account.

To achieve the set goals, the government is betting on the introduction of digital technologies, innovations, and environmentally safe farming methods. Special attention is paid to protecting biodiversity and supporting local knowledge. The program's priorities include expanding research, developing inclusive mechanization, introducing guaranteed minimum purchase prices, accessible lending, risk insurance, and raising food safety standards.

The document outlines coordination mechanisms between government levels — federal, provincial, and local. The implementation of the strategy involves active involvement of the private sector, the creation of a legal framework, and the allocation of necessary funding. The ministry expects that the systematic implementation of these measures will allow for increasing employment, establishing import substitution, and ensuring the growth of the national economy through the promotion of Nepalese brands in global markets.
