Methods of plant protection for vegetable crops against opossums in a garden plot
Opossums are capable of causing serious damage to a vegetable garden in a short period of time. Signs of their presence include torn leaves, partially eaten fruit, excrement, as well as tracks in the soil and damage to trees or fences. Since these animals play an important role in the ecosystem by destroying insects and carrion, the optimal strategy is to create conditions that make the site unattractive to them.
The most effective solution is a combination of physical barriers and special taste repellents. The use of ultrasonic pest control devices is considered ineffective: studies show that animals quickly get used to such noises. Relocating individuals to other territories is not recommended, as it disrupts the social structure of the population and can lead to the death of the animals due to problems with finding food and shelter. Furthermore, new individuals quickly arrive to replace the removed ones.
To minimize damage, hygiene rules should be followed and access to food sources should be restricted. Compost bins should be equipped with tightly closing lids and airtight bases. It is not recommended to add dairy products and meat waste to them, as these attract animals. Vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, strawberries, and corn, are best protected with netting or placed in areas that are difficult for opossums to access. Planting plants with strong odors, thorns, or prickles, such as lavender and roses, can also reduce the interest of pests in garden beds, although this method does not provide a one-hundred-percent guarantee.
When using repellent sprays, it is important to ensure regular application: the product must be renewed every few days, especially after dew or precipitation. As a compromise, it is acceptable to create a separate feeding zone on the site, far from valuable vegetable plantings. It is important to remember that opossums can be carriers of toxoplasmosis and leptospirosis, so when working in the garden, it is necessary to avoid direct contact with them and observe safety precautions when handling soil.
