Maharashtra is implementing artificial intelligence in agriculture.
500 crore rupees have been allocated for the development of the state's technological potential. The program provides for the creation of an ecosystem that unites government agencies, agricultural universities, research institutes, startups, and farmers. The Artificial Intelligence and AgTech Innovation Center (AIAIC) is intended to become the key link between industry participants.
One of the foundations of the new policy is the MahaVISTAAR-AI project, which provides personalized agricultural consulting. Instead of template recommendations, the system will analyze the data of a specific farm: crop type, location, weather conditions, and current risks. For example, this will allow grape growers from Nashik to receive timely information on crop protection against climate changes, and cotton producers in Vidarbha to receive information about rainfall levels and pest threats.
In parallel, work is underway to create the MahaAgX agricultural data exchange platform. The integration of information on soil condition, weather, market situation, and satellite data is intended to create an intelligent decision support system both at the level of individual farms and at the level of state administration. This will allow for better forecasting of harvest volumes, pest risks, price fluctuations, and potential disruptions in supply chains.
The diversity of Maharashtra's agriculture — from the production of grapes and pomegranates to cotton and soybeans — makes the state a suitable platform for testing innovations. Technologies for yield forecasting, product quality assessment, and digital traceability are intended not only to increase productivity but also to strengthen the competitiveness of the state's products in international markets. The final success of the technology implementation will be assessed by specific indicators: risk reduction, growth in farmers' incomes, and optimization of land and water resource use.
