IOM report: 27 incidents between farmers and livestock breeders were recorded in Katsina and Zamfara states.

According to the Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) developed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 21 conflict-related events and six cases of livestock movement were recorded in Katsina and Zamfara states in June 2026. The incidents were monitored in the Batsari, Dan-Musa, Jibia, Faskari, and Safana areas (Katsina), as well as in Bungudu and Gusau (Zamfara). The highest number of reports came from the Gusau (26%) and Bungudu (22%) areas.

Events classified as agropastoral conflicts accounted for 71% of the total number of incidents. The main triggers of tension were the destruction of crops and fields (40%), encroachment on arable land (27%), and the use of livestock herding routes outside official corridors (20%). All six recorded cases of late herd movement, involving 957 head of cattle, were assessed by informants as potentially conflictual.

The consequences of the incidents include material damage: in 29% of cases, crops were affected, and 10% of the events involved injuries or loss of life. Despite measures taken, such as dialogues, information campaigns, and rerouting of herds via alternative paths, 48% of the conflicts remained unresolved at the time of the report. In 73% of cases, local community leaders were involved in the resolution, and in 55%, national or local authorities were involved.

The TTT tool, funded by the European Union, is designed to prevent clashes due to the reduction of available pastures and water sources. The system relies on reports from local peace committees and specialized groups that record both events that have already occurred and risky livestock movements.
