In Northern Ireland, an investigation is underway following the mass culling of 51 head of livestock animals.

The livestock culling operation was carried out by the DAERA humane slaughter service near Fivemiletown, based on a court order. The owner of the animals had previously been found guilty of breaching livestock welfare regulations, following which the court stripped him of ownership rights and ordered the herd to be culled.

Minister of Agriculture Andrew Muir explained that the choice of an open field for the proceedings was due to operational difficulties, as well as health and safety considerations. According to the Minister, during the work, the department encountered unforeseen challenges caused by the actions of local residents who gathered at the site of the slaughter and obstructed the work of the specialists. As a result, the process dragged on until late in the evening, and the removal of the carcasses was not completed until the next day.

The incident drew criticism from local officials and industry representatives. Councillor Eugene McConnell described the situation as "the Wild West," noting the open nature of the procedure, which became public knowledge. Deborah Erskine, MLA, emphasized that such actions caused serious concern in the community because outsiders, including passing citizens, witnessed the process.

The Ulster Farmers' Union (UFU) has requested an urgent meeting with the ministry. The organization's president, John McClenaghan, stated that although there were legal grounds for the slaughter, the methods used in the operation require thorough analysis. The union's position is that the culling of livestock must be carried out proportionally, humanely, and in a way that maintains the trust of both the farming community and the public.

The ministry is currently engaging with the police to assess the circumstances of the case. The department has officially confirmed that an internal review is underway, the results of which will identify necessary improvements for future operations of this type.
