First cases of bluetongue disease have been recorded in Scotland.

The first case of the disease was diagnosed in a lamb on Fiona Johnson's farm, who had moved to the region a few months ago. The livestock animal exhibited symptoms such as salivation, difficulty chewing feed, and stiffness of movement. Subsequently, the lamb was euthanized for veterinary reasons. The remaining 27 lambs and five calves on the farm tested negative for the virus.

Experts suggest that midges, carried to Scotland from England by the wind, became the carriers of the disease. Currently, 439 cases of the disease have been recorded in England. Despite prompt measures, the virus has been detected in four more animals on three neighboring farms in the Creetown area, including the first case of infection in cattle.

Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV3) does not pose a danger to humans and does not affect food safety; however, it causes high mortality in sheep and reproductive disorders in cows. Typical symptoms include nasal discharge, redness and swelling of mucous membranes, lameness, a decrease in milk yield, and diarrhea in cattle.

Scotland's Chief Veterinary Officer Sheila Voas has urged livestock owners to vaccinate their animals. However, there is a shortage of preparations in the region: at the Ark Vet Centre in Lockerbie, a stock of 20,000 vaccine doses was exhausted in less than two days. John Hamilton from this veterinary clinic noted that the spread of the virus was only a matter of time and emphasized the need for high vigilance to protect the livestock.

Representatives of the National Farmers Union of Scotland (NFU Scotland) point to serious risks for the industry. John Cowan noted that the introduction of restrictions on the movement of animals during the preparation for sale for breeding purposes could cause significant financial damage and negatively affect animal welfare. All animals confirmed to have the diagnosis have now been euthanized. Farmers continue to monitor the condition of their herds, fearing further spread of the infection.
