Farmers in Bhojpur are switching to turmeric cultivation due to monkey raids

In the Bhojpur district, local farmers are massively shifting to the cultivation of turmeric due to the constant damage caused by monkeys. The animals systematically destroy crops of maize, millet, rice, as well as fruit and other crops. This new practice is spreading particularly actively in lowlands and plots located near forests, where animal attacks cause the greatest damage.

As locals note, turmeric has proven to be less vulnerable to pest invasions because monkeys do not consume its rhizomes. This crop has become a reliable and safe source of income for affected farms. Growing turmeric attracts farmers with low labor and investment costs, the possibility of long-term storage of the harvested crop, and the plant's medicinal properties.

Local produce enjoys steady demand and is easily sold on the market without marketing difficulties. Currently, turmeric and kuruwa are sold on the local market at a price of 100 to 120 rupees per kilogram.
