According to the expert, attempts to return to farming methods from the mid-20th century fail to account for the fundamental changes that have occurred in the sector. While productivity growth from the 1940s to the 1990s was driven by the use of legumes and nitrogen-fixing plants, modern conditions require different approaches to sustain the sector.

Using the Canterbury Plains as an example, Rowarth demonstrates how the change in land use structure following the removal of government subsidies in the mid-1980s led to the transformation of the industry. The transition to dairy farming allowed for the implementation of modern irrigation systems and the control of soil moisture, which reduced nitrogen losses. The use of the "4Rs" scientific approach (right fertilizer, right rate, right place, and right time) has become the standard for increasing yield while minimizing environmental impacts and fertilizer costs.

The material emphasizes that abandoning synthetic fertilizers does not guarantee economic stability for farms. Despite a higher price per kilogram for produce grown using "natural" methods, total farm profit is often lower due to a decline in harvest volumes. Research at the Whatawhata Research Station showed that reducing livestock density and expanding forested areas led to an increase in nitrate concentration in water and a decrease in soil organic matter content.

Rowarth concludes that the current level of technology and scientific research makes it possible to improve food quality and work toward better environmental indicators. In the author's view, attempts to ignore current production realities in favor of nostalgic ideas about the past do not contribute to the development of the agricultural sector.
