Deer diet preferences: which crops attract livestock animals

Deer are opportunistic herbivores whose diet depends on the seasonal availability of food and the current needs of the organism. Despite a wide range of consumed plants, including various grasses, shrubs, and tree foliage, it is agricultural crops that often become a priority due to their high concentration of nutrients and energy value.

Studies show that soybean and corn are consistently the most preferred crops for these animals. Soybean is particularly attractive during early growth stages due to its high protein content and succulent leaves, however, deer continue to feed on it even during the pod formation period. Corn is also subject to intensive browsing: in the early stages, the animals consume tender stems and leaves, which can lead to significant harvest losses, and as the crop matures, they switch to cobs as a source of high-energy feed. In addition to these crops, depending on availability, the deer diet may include alfalfa, oats, wheat, as well as cucurbit crops.

The dietary habits of deer change throughout the year. In spring and summer, they seek young greenery, in autumn they switch to nuts and fruits to accumulate winter fat reserves, and in winter, they resort to eating woody vegetation. The intensity of impact on fields depends on the region, population density, and the presence of alternative food sources in the natural habitat.

For farmers, the presence of deer in fields carries the risk of economic losses due to damage to crops. Monitoring fields for signs of animal presence — such as nibbled leaves, damaged stems, droppings, or tracks — is a necessary stage of crop management. As preventive measures, farmers use the creation of specialized forage plots capable of distracting animals from primary commercial crops, and also apply repellents, the effectiveness of which can be increased by regularly changing the types of protection agents. The environmental situation, the presence of natural predators, and climatic conditions also influence deer activity and the intensity of their impact on agricultural land.
