Damage caused by muskrats: risks to hydraulic structures and agriculture
Muskrats are semi-aquatic rodents known for their active burrowing. Their creation of extensive tunnel systems in shorelines, embankments, and dams poses a threat of erosion, soil subsidence, and structural failure. Furthermore, the rodents can penetrate septic system drain fields, damaging pipelines and disrupting equipment operation.
For the agricultural sector, the main problem is the destruction of vegetation. Muskrats feed on aquatic plants, including cattails, reeds, and sedges, but they also consume agricultural crops, particularly corn and soybeans. Similar activity is observed in home gardens, where the animals damage ornamental plantings.
Muskrat population numbers are increasing due to the high fertility of females, which are capable of producing several litters per year. Population growth leads to increased pressure on ecosystems and higher water turbidity due to soil erosion, which negatively impacts fish and aquatic plant health.
To prevent damage, various control methods are used, including habitat modification, the installation of fencing, and the use of repellents. Trapping is considered an effective way to control numbers, with regulations depending on local laws. The autumn and winter months are considered the best time for such activities. When damage to dams or levees is detected, professional repair using compacted soil or reinforcing materials is recommended.
Although natural predators, such as foxes, coyotes, hawks, and owls, can limit the number of rodents, their influence is often insufficient when muskrat population density is high. When working with the animals, caution should be exercised, as they may bite for protection and are carriers of diseases.
