Conflict over the acquisition of agricultural land for the needs of a private university in Gombe

In Gombe State, representatives of the Kundulum community have protested against the forced alienation of plots used by local residents for agricultural activities. The discussion was sparked by plans to establish a permanent site for a private educational institution, Jewel University. During the meeting, chaired by Alhaji Shuaibu Gara, it was stated that the land acquisition process had not been accompanied by proper consultations with the plot owners.

According to the information provided, government authorities have already begun demarcating an area of approximately 110 hectares. Local residents expressed dissatisfaction that compensation payments for the seized land are significantly lower than its market value. Community representatives emphasized that this land is their sole source of income, and the loss of these lands will jeopardize the well-being of their families and their future agricultural activities.

Alhaji Shuaibu Gara noted that the Kundulum community had previously ceded territories for various state projects, including Gombe State University, the Federal College of Education, a market, and the "Livestock City." However, according to community representatives, this did not lead to the expected results in terms of job creation or significant social development of the area.

Meeting participants are calling on the leadership of Jewel University to establish a direct dialogue with landowners for fair negotiations, rather than relying on forced alienation mechanisms. In turn, a request has been made to state authorities to ensure the transparency of the process, guarantee fair compensation, and uphold the rights of local residents whose agricultural resources are under threat of seizure.
