Choosing between cracked and whole corn grain for deer feeding
Deer are ruminants whose four-chambered stomach is adapted for digesting fibrous plant food. Corn acts as a source of carbohydrates, however, the method of its delivery significantly affects the digestive process. Crushed corn attracts animals faster as it is easier to digest. At the same time, whole grain provides a more gradual intake of energy and reduces the likelihood of rapid fermentation in the stomach.
The main risk when using both types of feed is acidosis, a condition caused by the consumption of excessive amounts of easily digestible carbohydrates. This leads to a drop in pH levels in the rumen, the death of beneficial microflora, and a risk of the livestock animal dying. In addition, when stored improperly, grain is prone to mold formation, which contains toxins dangerous to deer. Specialists recommend storing corn in dry, well-ventilated facilities.
To minimize risks during feeding, corn should be introduced into the diet gradually, feed volumes should be limited, and animals should be provided with access to natural forage resources. Mixing whole and crushed fractions allows for a balance between the rapid attractiveness of the feed and long-term energy maintenance. It is also important to remember that corn does not replace a complete diet. For normal antler growth, deer require protein and mineral supplements, and dietary diversity is ensured through hay, soybeans, alfalfa, and natural forage lands.
When organizing feeding, it should be considered that corn can also attract other wild animals, such as turkeys, squirrels, raccoons, or wild boars. Decisions regarding the feeding strategy must be made in accordance with local regulations established by environmental agencies. Signs of health problems in deer that require veterinary intervention include lethargy, loss of appetite, bloating, diarrhea, and impaired coordination of movement.
