Changes to regional boundaries in the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards

As part of the restructuring, the Northern Waikato/Hauraki region now includes the Morrinsville district, as well as the Franklin and South Auckland areas. This decision is aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the awards program and adapting the structure to the modern realities of the dairy industry.

The redistribution of boundaries was necessary due to varying conditions in the regions. The previously existing Auckland/Hauraki region was facing a decline in participant numbers, changing land-use patterns, and the need to rely on a limited circle of volunteers. At the same time, the neighboring Waikato region demonstrated active growth, possessing a significant participant base, strong sponsor support, and a reliable team of volunteers.

According to the awards board chair, Paulette Jones, the adjustment of boundaries, including the inclusion of the Morrinsville district, is intended to create more balanced conditions for supporting farmers, volunteers, and sponsors. National committee chair Megan Legg noted that such a reorganization allows for strengthening the volunteer base, many of whom are former contestants themselves.

The changes were implemented following consultations with regional managers, relevant committees, stakeholders, and national sponsors. For awards participants, the judging format, competition categories, and sponsor benefits remain unchanged. Applications for 2027 under the new regional structure open on October 5.
