Bad weather in Crete has damaged agriculture

Ecology

On the island of Crete, the consequences of severe weather continue, causing torrents of water that destroy infrastructure and inflict massive damage on agricultural production. In the Lassithi Plateau area, local farmers are facing widespread destruction: according to preliminary estimates, more than 80% of potato and vegetable crops have been destroyed.

A difficult situation persists in mountainous Mylopotamos, specifically in the Zoniana area, where the water level in the riverbed is not dropping, and raging torrents have reached the foundations of two residential houses whose structural stability is currently being assessed. For safety reasons, about 30 people have been evacuated from their homes in Zoniana. In addition, the severe weather damaged the water supply network, leaving 2,500 residents of Zoniana, Livadia, and Krana without water. Torrents of water washed away and destroyed the network from the Apladiana area upward, and at present there is no exact timeline for the start of repair work.

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), cloudy weather with rain and local thunderstorms is expected in Crete and the Dodecanese until noon, with precipitation in Crete having been heavy at times until the early morning hours.
