Atherstone hosted the 75th British ploughing championships
The 75th British Annual Ploughing Championships took place in Atherstone, bringing together ploughmen from all over Great Britain. As Sue Frith, Chief Executive of the Society of Ploughmen, noted, the event unites the agricultural community and allows visitors to explore changes in the country's farming heritage.
The two-day competition is held on a farm near Twycross Zoo. Participants compete in various classes, and the winners in the elite categories Class 1 and Class 2 earn the right to represent the country at the World Ploughing Championships. James Witty, the 2025 World Champion in traditional ploughing, emphasized that achieving success in this discipline requires a significant investment of time, dedication, and high skill.
In addition to demonstrating traditional skills, the event addressed pressing issues in the agricultural sector. The organizers highlighted the difficulties farmers faced due to the hot summer, prolonged drought, and challenging harvesting in Great Britain, noting the importance of such events in recognizing the contribution of agricultural workers to society.
