Application of hydrogen peroxide for soil tillage
Tillage with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) helps eliminate harmful bacteria, fungi, and insects, creating favorable conditions for the development of the root system. When applied to the soil, the substance decomposes into water and oxygen. The latter provides a disinfecting effect, neutralizing anaerobic organisms and improving substrate aeration.
A key factor for effectiveness and safety is the concentration of the solution. Using 3% hydrogen peroxide requires dilution in a proportion ranging from 1 part of the product to 4–9 parts of water. In the case of using a 35% food-grade concentrate, it must be diluted in a ratio from 1:50 to 1:100. Exceeding the recommended application rates can harm beneficial microflora and the root system of plants.
For seedlings, weaker solutions should be used — approximately 1 part of 3% peroxide to 9 parts of water. When working with soil, it is important to consider the pH level: the product is most effective in a neutral or slightly acidic environment. Furthermore, it is not recommended to mix peroxide with other chemical preparations to avoid unpredictable reactions.
Hydrogen peroxide is recognized as an environmentally safe method, as it decomposes rapidly without leaving residual substances. The frequency of treatment depends on the sensitivity of specific crops and the degree of infestation; however, experts advise against performing the procedure too often to avoid disrupting the balance in the soil. Before mass application, it is recommended to test the solution on a small area. In cases where the soil has already been treated, additional application of beneficial microbes may be required to restore the microflora.
This method demonstrates effectiveness in combating fungus gnats and root rot. In the latter case, the product eliminates the anaerobic bacteria causing the disease. Nevertheless, in cases of root rot, it is important to address the root cause of the problem, such as poor drainage. Signs indicating the need for such measures may include stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, wilting of plants, or the presence of pests.
