The abbreviation NPK stands for three key nutrients that plants obtain from the soil: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Nitrogen is responsible for the development of the aerial part of the plant, directly influencing chlorophyll production, color intensity, and growth rates. This element is the most in-demand for nutrition, however, it is quickly leached by frequent irrigation or heavy rainfall.

Phosphorus participates in energy processes and the formation of the root system, as well as in flowering and fruiting. Since phosphorus does not move well in the soil, it is advisable to apply it directly to the root zone. Potassium ensures plant resistance to stress factors. Its deficiency often manifests as darkening of leaf edges, which is frequently mistaken for sunburn.

On fertilizer packaging, NPK values are always presented in a strict sequence. These numbers demonstrate the ratio of nutrients. When choosing a composition, it is recommended to consider the type of plant, its growth phase, and the current state of the soil. Experts recommend preliminary soil testing to achieve more accurate results, as there are no universal application rates.

Fertilizers can be liquid or granular. Liquid forms act faster and are suitable for immediate nutritional correction, while granules release nutrients gradually. The application of fertilizers on houseplants is possible, however, compositions of reduced concentration should be used for them, as such crops absorb nutrients more slowly. Storage of fertilizers in humid conditions is undesirable, as moisture promotes the premature breakdown of the composition's components.

Ignoring the plant's need for these elements leads to signs of stress, which become noticeable through slowed growth rates. For effective care, it is important to avoid excessive fertilizer application and to consider the individual requirements of a specific crop during different development periods.
