A comprehensive approach to crop protection against birds

Plant protection

To prevent the destruction of seed, seedlings, and ripening fruits, farmers employ a variety of plant protection methods. One of the most effective methods is the use of physical barriers, in particular, the installation of protective netting, which is especially relevant for high-value crops, such as berries and fruits. However, this method requires expenditure on equipment and installation, and if installed incorrectly, it can damage plants.

Visual and acoustic repellents are widely used. The former include both traditional scarecrows and more modern devices. To prevent birds from getting used to them, it is recommended to frequently change the location and type of the structures. Acoustic systems include various devices, from simple noise-making tools to complex electronics. Their effectiveness may decrease due to birds becoming accustomed to the noise, and ultrasonic devices often show limited results. Furthermore, acoustic methods can cause inconvenience to neighbors.

More environmentally sustainable strategies include attracting natural predators, such as birds of prey, and habitat modification. The latter involves changing conditions on the plot so that it becomes less attractive to birds. Also, specially trained dogs can be used for patrolling fields.

Chemical repellents make a crop unattractive to birds, but their use is often controversial due to potential environmental risks, including pollution of water, soil, and negative impacts on other animal species. These agents require regular reapplication and can be costly.

Experts emphasize that the most effective protection is built on a combination of several methods. It is important to accurately identify the bird species causing damage and to take into account local regulations: many bird species are protected by law, so the use of lethal control methods requires mandatory approval from local authorities. Farmers are also advised to contact government agencies or agricultural advisory services to obtain technical support or to find financial assistance programs for crop protection issues.
