Early-maturing hybrids: early harvest and quick turnover
For quick market entry of fresh vegetables and an early start to processing, choose early-maturing hybrids. Plants of this group begin to produce a harvest as early as 40–50 days after mass seedling emergence. They are suitable for growing in open soil and under temporary film covers, demonstrating high resistance to major pathogens.
- Othello. An ultra-early maturing hybrid, ripening on the 40–45th day. Small-tubercled, crunchy fruits without bitterness are suitable for fresh consumption and canning, retaining their marketability for a long time. Plants are resistant to cucumber mosaic virus, cladosporiosis, two causative agents of powdery mildew, and are relatively resistant to downy mildew.
- Regina. A mid-early hybrid, prone to parthenocarpy, ripening on the 50th day after seedling emergence. Elegant fruits without bitterness possess excellent flavor. The hybrid is resistant to cucumber mosaic virus, cladosporiosis, causative agents of powdery mildew, and root rots.
- Leandro. An early, highly disease- and stress-resistant hybrid with large tubercles. A predominantly female type of flowering ensures a high load of fruit set. Fruits without bitterness with small seed chambers do not form voids during canning, are excellent for crunching, and store well for a long time.
- Matilda. A very early self-pollinating hybrid with large tubercles. It is characterized by a predominantly female type of flowering, an abundance of fruits, an absence of bitterness, and small seed chambers. The crunchy cucumbers are ideal for pickling and are resistant to stress.
- Evita. An early-maturing gherkin hybrid for open soil and tunnels. Due to the predominantly female type of flowering, it forms a large number of fruits without bitterness. Crunchy fruits with small seed chambers are considered the best choice for canning.
- Octopus. An early-maturing gherkin, entering fruiting on the 50th day. Short-cylindrical, dark green fruits, 6–9 cm in length, with white pubescence are not bitter and are suitable for canning. Plants are resistant to cladosporiosis, bacteriosis, and relatively resistant to downy mildew and root rots.
- Epilogue. An early hybrid with a concentrated harvest of fruits weighing 72–108 g. It is valued for its stability, the absence of bitterness in the fruits, and high taste qualities both fresh and canned.
For obtaining large marketable fruits, the early-maturing hybrid Zozulya is used. It possesses partial parthenocarpy and enters fruiting on the 46–48th day after mass seedling emergence. Weakly tubercled fruits with white pubescence and a smooth base have the following characteristics:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Fruit length | 14—23 cm |
| Fruit mass | 156-289 g |
| Yield | 20—25 kg/m² |
Mid-maturing hybrids: stable conveyor and pickling properties
Hybrids with medium ripening times form a powerful leaf canopy and ensure a long harvesting period. They are suitable for growing in open soil, spring greenhouses, and tunnels. Fruits of these hybrids traditionally possess the highest pickling qualities.
The Lord and Farmer hybrids are bee-pollinated. When growing in temporary film covers, spring greenhouses, or tunnels, be sure to provide access for pollinating insects.
- Levina. A mid-early, powerful hybrid with a predominantly female type of flowering. White-spined fruits without bitterness are suitable for pickling and canning. Plants are resistant to adverse weather, cucumber mosaic virus, and powdery mildew.
- Libelle. A widely distributed hybrid with good vigor. It produces finely ribbed, white-spined fruits ranging from medium to dark green in color. It is practically resistant to downy mildew and cladosporiosis.
- Lord. A mid-maturing, high-yielding hybrid with a predominantly female type of flowering for open soil and tunnels. Fruits 10–12 cm long possess high pickling qualities. It is resistant to downy mildew and olive spot disease.
- Farmer. A mid-maturing hybrid with a predominantly female type of flowering, capable of partial self-pollination. It is relatively cold-hardy and resistant to olive spot disease, downy mildew, and powdery mildew. Fruits 10–12 cm long are suitable for pickling.
A feature of the Farmer hybrid is the intensive growth of the main shoot. Rapid regrowth of lateral shoots provides a sharp peak of massive and prolonged fruiting.
- Marinda. A mid-early, self-pollinating hybrid with a predominantly female type of flowering. Large-tubercled fruits without bitterness with small seed chambers possess excellent crunch and pickling properties. Plants are resistant to stress and disease.
- Rodnichok. A mid-maturing hybrid with medium shoot branching. Cylindrical, weakly tubercled fruits with a smooth base do not contain bitterness and are valued for their excellent taste.
- Length of the main shoot of Rodnichok — 2.8—3 m
- Mass of fruit — 90-100 g
- Number of fruits per node — 2—3 pcs.
